Rome, 1980. Goliarda Sapienza, a fiercely independent writer, has just spent over a decade crafting her masterwork, The Art of Joy, only to face rejection from the Italian publishing world. In a spontaneous and defiant act, she is arrested for stealing jewelry and lands in prison—a place she never imagined she’d end up, but one that will change her life forever.

Inside, Goliarda meets a group of younger women, including Roberta, a repeat offender and political activist. A bond of trust and solidarity forms—raw, real, and deeply human. Once released, the women continue to meet throughout a long, sweltering Roman summer, their connection defying social expectations and rebuilding Goliarda’s sense of self. Through this intense and unconventional friendship, Goliarda finds joy again—and the will to write.

Mario Martone’s Fuori is a powerful, moving portrait of female resilience, anti-conformism, and the emotional sanctuary that can emerge from shared adversity. Based on the real-life experiences of one of Italy’s most iconic feminist voices, this is a story of outsiders finding each other—and finding strength.

“Mario Martone’s nonconformist portrait of celebrated Italian writer and provocateur Goliarda Sapienza, in an often elusive but pleasingly nonconformist feminist tale that takes a timely stand for personal liberty.
The Film Verdict

“Fuori is not just about prison—it’s about liberation.”
Il Manifesto

“The cross-cutting… adds something dynamic to a movie that’s more of a chronicle celebrating the women’s burgeoning friendship than a full-fledged drama.”
