Directed by Brendan Bellomo and key subject Slava Leontyev, this inspirational Oscar nominated documentary tells the harrowing story of the war in Ukraine through the eyes of those fighting against the Russian invasion on the ground. Leontyev, his wife Anya and their friend Andrey Stefanov tell, at great personal risk and with footage they shot themselves – the story of how their lives as artists were brutally upended by the war. Now, although they’ve taken up new, unfamiliar roles as Ukrainian soldiers – they’ve never lost their passion for art and nature as they risk everything for family, nation and freedom.
Winner of the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Nominated for the 2025 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
“In its tribute to the inspiring, endlessly inventive aspects of human behaviour that extreme situations of pressure can reveal, Porcelain War stands out as one of the stronger recent documentaries to emerge on the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which currently has no end in sight, and on human resistance and psychological adaptation in times of war generally.” – The Film Verdict
“The latest documentary dispatch from Ukraine, “Porcelain War,” brings a message of hope rooted in art.” – The New York Times
“Porcelain War is a personal testament, almost like a moving scrapbook which begins to add memories previously unimagined.” – Screendaily
